George Christian, a son of John Straley, was born in Stattgarst, Germany September 21, 1742 and died in Lewis County VA (WV) August 14, 1818.  He arrived in New York aboard the ship "Speedwell" in company with his parents, and uncle Jacob in 1758.  He married Christina Lantz.  Christina, a daughter of Jacob and Catherine Lantz, was born in NJ March er 23, 1748. Christian served the Colonies in the American Revolution as a private in Isaac Cooper's 8th Co 5th Battalion of the Philadelphia City Militia.

According to Shoemaker's book, he served in the Union Army from Lewis Co., WV, and wrote letters to his mother, sending her money for her support. He never married, and presumably died in the service.

According to the 1850 and later censuses, all of their children were born in Ohio. Judging from this, they'd left VA by the birth of their first child, Eliza, in 1825. The birthplace of their fourth child, Rosannah (who was born in 1834), is given as Green Co., OH. This county was formed in 1803, and lies just west of present-day Fayette Co. Either this is in error, or they moved briefly between the 1830 and 1840 censuses to Green Co.Was definitely in Fayette Co. by Sept. 1829, when he was a witness before a Grand Jury in the Court of Common Pleas there, along with David and Michael and George Creamer.

Samuel bought 142.25 acres in Fayette Co., OH on May 31, 1845 from his father-in-law, Michael Creamer for $497. On this day Michael sold acerage to several of his sons and sons-in-law. His father, George Straley died in 1846, and Samuel and Susannah Creamer Straley signed papers selling their share of his farm in 1850 to Elijah Waggoner and his wife, who was Samuel's sister (DB Q, page 86 - transcription in LS book, p. XVI).   1848 - Listed as a member of the militia of Jasper Township, Fayette Co., OH for the year 1848.

According to her sister, Annie Caddy's diary, Mary's husband was taken prisoner in the Civil War, in Aug or Sept of 1864. Mary apparently lived in Forest, OH, and Annie went to visit her in Oct. of 1864, finding it a forelorn place (see p. 42, Wed. Oct. 19 entry).
